Steven Whiteman - Vocals, Drums & Harmonica
Yes I am still alive and kicking! I survived 18 years of constant
touring in KIX and I was a vital part of the live performances for which KIX was
known. Hopefully, I bring some of that energy and performance to the table with
Funny Money.
For those of you who don't know much about KIX, I'll give you the short
rundown. KIX released six albums on Atlantic records. We enjoyed success mostly
on the east coast up until the release of our fourth album, "Blow My
Fuse". It was this album that finally brought us the national
attention that we deserved. With a Top 10 single in "Don't Close Your
Eyes", MTV playing KIX videos, touring the country with Ratt, Tesla, Great
White and Whitesnake, KIX had most definitly arrived.
We also enjoyed our first touring outside the US, embarking on tours of
Canada, The U. K. and Japan. The follow up album "Hot
Wire" was released just about the time the music scene and the
entire industry began to change. This would of course ultimately lead to the end
of the band. KIX agreed to release a live album in 1993 in return for our
freedom from Atlantic Records. KIX then signed with a smaller label CMC
International.
I like to say the music industry started a new party and KIX was not invited.
KIX released one album on CMC, "Show Business" which
did a disproportionate number of unit sales. That was the point at which all of
us agreed to part ways.
Soon after, I began teaching voice professionally. I am sharing my
experience and musical knowledge with students at The Musician's Institute in
Baltimore and Triple R Guitar in Harrisburg. Not being anywhere near ready for
retiring from live performance, I started a new project, Funny
Money, which has spent the last seven years performing in the
Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania area (with the occasional
jaunt to NYC and The Carolinas). Billy Andrews, former FM guitar player, was the
one who prompted me to start a project. I have to thank him for getting me
motivated.
I have written and released two studio CDs, "Funny
Money" and "Back Again". Funny Money has
also released a live CD recorded in Springfield, VA at JAXX nightclub. Check the
Funny Money show calendar frequently. You may catch a Funny Money date or two
with my old KIX bandmate Ronnie Younkins and his project The Blues Vultures,
which occasionally includes my other old KIX bandmate, Jimmy Chalfant on drums.
These are fun shows for me as well as the fans. I love getting together with
those guys, it's very special when it happens. |
